Creating Space to Grow: Maura aka Mo Phoenix on Music, Mentorship and MMCđŸŽ¶

At The Midi Music Company (MMC), we love inspiring creative minds. This time, we caught up with Maura, also known by their artist name Mo Phoenix, who is currently in their second year of our internship programme and continuing to develop their skills as a music producer and artist.

Maura’s journey with MMC began before her internship, through workshops and courses that opened the door to the music industry and, over time, led her to some unforgettable opportunities. As a current intern, she’s been reflecting on how access, community and hands-on learning have shaped her path so far.

“Dear Reader,

Being an intern at The Midi Music Company has been a bright and loving start to my adventure into music producing.”

Over the past two years, Maura has grown not only creatively but professionally – learning how to manage her time, build discipline, and sharpen her skills while gaining real insight into how the music industry works.

“In my two years of understanding how to manage my time, discipline and hone my skills, I have also had a unique look in to the Music Industry being a part of MMC’s showcase at The English Folk Expo in Manchester, attending the Artist and Manager Awards – not once, but twice (crossing paths with The Pet Shop Boys, Paloma Faith and JADE). I also got the chance to attend the first SXSW London festival hosted in Shoreditch. All of these opportunities were directly through The Midi Music Company.”

Through MMC, Maura attended the English Folk Expo in Manchester, the Artist & Manager Awards in both 2024 and 2025, and the inaugural SXSW London, experiences that offered rare access to industry spaces and global conversations around music.

Coming from Deptford with limited finances but a strong drive to learn, Maura found MMC’s accessible courses and professional guidance transformative.

“I was a local in Deptford with little finances and an ambitious drive for making music with a want to learn. MMC offers workshops and classes for very reasonable prices so I signed up for their CRE8TIV¼ Music Production course and from there I completed Wozzy Brewster OBE, FRSA ‘DIY Releasing’ class that teaches you all you need to know about self-releasing music as an independent artist and how to improve your reach (very useful, highly recommended). It’s great to get advice from experienced professionals in the industry who have learned the ropes and has the heart to pass the important bits of information on.”

In 2024, Maura applied for and secured a place on the MMC internship programme. As a current intern, they now has access to professional facilities including our newly refurbished studio, rehearsal rooms, and her own intern office – a dedicated space for both creativity and study.

“I then applied for the internship in 2024 and was so delighted to gain access to facilities like the main studio (Studio Live), Rehearsal rooms, and, on top of that, my own intern office (Soundtrack room) which has been a space of creating and studying two days a week. With the added help of expenses covered this made music a viable venture for me.”

But for Maura, the most meaningful part of MMC goes beyond studios and equipment – it’s the people.

“Aside from the facilities the biggest branch of support is the people and community that make The Midi Music Company what it is. I’ve had many laughs, hugs, rambles and rants with the CICAS¼ members, the tutors and the staff. I’ve made friends and learnt that I can ask for help without shame because sometimes it comes back around.”

As they continue their second year as an intern, Maura’s story is a powerful reminder of what happens when talent meets access, mentorship and genuine community support.

“This has been Mo Phoenix, over and out.”
