AYM
ABLETON MUSIC PRODUCTION
Starts Thursday 25 April 2024 : 10 weeks : 4.30pm–6pm
Whether it’s a ‘bedroom setup’ or studio, or a live performance scenario, Ableton Live music software opens a world of possibilities as to how you can explore and develop your musical ideas. This course will teach you how to build a track using Ableton’s versatile layout. You will be taken on a creative journey of arrangement, audio manipulation and producing your own beats.
By the end of the course you will have a practical knowledge of Ableton Live, the theory of music production, and how to create and perform your own electronic music.
The course is led by Ahmad Dayes, trombonist, session musician, recording studio engineer and CICAS® (Creative Industries Careers Advice Service) producer for The Midi Music Company.
KEYBOARD SKILLS FOR SONGWRITING
Starts Thursday 25 April 2024 : 10 weeks : 4.30pm–6pm
Learn how to create chord sequences, bass lines and melodies to empower you in your own songwriting. You will discover how to create effective and timeless songs, and collaborate with vocal and music production students, contributing chord sequences, bass lines and melodies to recordings and live performances.
The course is led by Raf Mantelli, an experienced educator, songwriter, performer and multi-instrumentalist whose reputation as an inspirational music leader is impressive.
MC/SPOKEN WORD
Starts Thursday 25 April 2024 : 10 weeks : 4.30pm–6pm
If you would like to develop your skills for MC, Rap and Spoken Word, work with backing tracks and live instrumentation, learn about music structure, microphone technique and dynamic performance, then this course is for you. Lyrical consultation and rhythm, combined with a confident delivery will empower you to inspire and impress.
The course is led by Kosher, a London-based recording artist/singer/songwriter with Jamaican roots. A singer and songwriting facilitator for 10 years, she has worked with YUAF, where she has mentored as many as 200 students. Kosher has recently joined The Midi music Company team and is excited to engage with her new students.
Cre8tiv®
MIXING & MASTERING
Tuesdays starting on 23 April 2024 : 10 weeks : 6pm–9pm (half-term week 27 May 2024)
This course will guide you through the recording process with detailed analysis
of system set ups, microphone types and placement and hands-on experience with studio equipment such as mixing consoles, processors and effects units. Learn how to get the best results from multi-track recordings, creating layers, overdubbing, replacing notes, programming MIDI events, automation, and converting to audio. Find out the purpose
and process of mastering, commonly used tools and techniques, and how to create a mastering chain. This 10-week intensive course is designed with independent artists in mind. If you are producing your own music, this course will totally raise your game.
The course is led by John ‘Nardo’ Bailey, who has enjoyed a long and varied music career. He has played drums behind many well-known reggae artists including Amazulu and is a project facilitator and music tutor. He has worked in schools and music organisations, and is a successful music producer, sound engineer and studio owner who also broadcasts a weekly reggae programme The Love and Light Show.
DJ COURSE WITH DJ NG
Thursdays starting on 25 April 2024 : 10 weeks : 6.30pm–9pm (half-term week 27 May 2024)
DJ NG will take you through a 10-week course covering the basic principles and techniques of DJ ‘mixing’ both with original 12” records and transitioning into an introduction to both basic and professional DJ equipment, enabling you to learn how to DJ-mix with digital formats. The course is aimed at anyone looking to learn the fundamentals of DJing, with opportunities
both for hands-on tutoring on Technic
1210 turntables and digital formats such as CDJ’s or Serato, supported by educational discussions into some of the history of DJ- mixing, London Pirate Radio and a snippet of the core principles behind Dance music production, clubs & marketing; leading up to a final student showcase at MMC’s Summer Show in July.
DJ NG is well-known for his Funky House track ‘Tell Me’ featuring Katy B & MC Versatile, which garnered a record deal with Ministry of Sound and radio play across dance& pirate stations, including Kiss FM. He is a former radio presenter of pioneering stations Reprezent Radio, BBC 1Xtra and Rinse FM.
DIY RELEASING: BACK TO BASICS (One day only)
SATURDAY 29 JUNE 2024 from 10am–4pm
This Back to Basics one-day course is for anyone who wants to release new music,
or who wants to understand any aspect of self-releasing, to improve your reach regardless of genre/musical style. It covers producing relevant assets, organising photo shoots, preparing artist or band bios, PR for the release, metadata for distributors and planning your release campaign, along with building your team. You’ll get an overview of the steps to take to make your release more successful and build on the opportunities that you create whilst preparing your music for global audiences.
The course is led by The Midi Music Company Founder and Executive Director, Wozzy Brewster, OBE FRSA – an experienced artist/ band manager, music industry consultant and Board or panel member to various music businesses. Students who have a live project can bring their laptop or tablet to share progress and work on their creative project. Please be prepared to take notes.
